Numerous reports in the media today have sparked unwarranted concerns over the safety of caramel used in colas.

The articles originate from a press release issued on the 5th March by US-based Centre for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). The press release claims that new analyses have found that cola drinks contain high levels of a compound called 4-MI, which can form in cola containing caramels from heating, roasting and cooking processes and estimates this is causing 15,000 cancers in the US population.

It can be easy to let your body move into a state of mild dehydration by simply not consuming enough fluids in relation to physical activity levels or climate or just forgetting to drink, however it is also just as simple to maintain a state of euhydration.

An increasing amount of research has been carried out looking into the impact of dehydration on cognition, and this has recently been added to by the University of Connecticut who conclude that ‘even mild dehydration which occurs before we start to feel thirsty could be enough to alter mood and energy levels.’

This year the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has provided positive opinions for a number of Article 13.1 health claims relating caffeine and carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks with positive effects on exercise performance and endurance.

Now, the findings of a recent study presented at the International Sports Science and Sports Medicine Conference 2011 has reported significant improvements in both skills and endurance performance when athletes were supplemented with a combination of caffeine and carbohydrates.

The latest story to be picked up by the media originates from a survey carried out by the University of Vancouver, which looked into the association between carbonated non-diet soft drink consumption and violence perpetration in adolescents from a number of Boston Public Schools.

The frustrating claims which have arisen from the survey suggest that there is a strong relationship between soft drinks and violence. The authors of the study even go as far as saying, “When we broke it down we found that incidence of violence was going up with every extra can of soft drink.”
